When the railroad reached Honea Path in 1853, he was chosen Depot Agent position which he held for 28 years. Before the war he built the Shirley Hotel and was its owner and manager for forth years.
He served in the Confederacy, 1st Lt. Copany E 20th South Carolina, resigned 13 November 1863 by General P.G. Beauregard.
He gave the land for the Honea Path Baptist Church and a right of way to the spring and pool on his property, located on Ervin and Shirmadon Drive.
