He married Matilda Annie Lickteig on Nov. 25, 1903 in Louisville. Although already age 30 when he married, he and Matilda shared nearly 60 years of marriage together, raising these five children:
Andrew Charles Hartlage, Jr. (1906-1974)
Irvin Valentine Hartlage (1908-1984)
Irene Ann Hartlage Dobbins (1909-1987)
Gilbert Henry Hartlage, Sr. (1910-1999)
Elmer John Hartlage (1916-1987)
Andrew worked as a rough carpenter, sometimes referred to as a wood butcher. He did framing for houses, including that for his son Gilbert when he was 75 years old. At age 80 he was still working as a night watchman. He loved his church, gardening, playing pinochle and Falls City beer, but most of all, he loved his family.
