"Dwight A King, 75, of Spartansburg, RD 2, died Wednesday, Feb 9, 1994, in St Vincent Health Center in Erie. Mr King was born in DeGraff, Ohio, Dec 7, 1918, a son of the late Nelson L and Grace B Stayrook King. He was raised and educated in the DeGraff area and then moved with his family to Bloomfield Township, Crawford County, where he attended school in Lincolnville. During World War II, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and flew B-17 bombers in the European Theatre. In March of 1945, Mr King's plane was shot down over Germany and he was captured and held as a prisoner of war there. He received several awards of honor throughout his military service including the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with one bronze battle star. Following his discharge he returned to State College and attended and graduated from Penn State University in 1948 with a bachelor of science degree in agricultural science. He then returned to the Spartansburg area and owned and operated a dairy farm. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Spartansburg. He was also a member of the Cleo J Ross Post 368 American Legion in Titusville and the John Krol Post 6773 VFW in Union City, and was a member of the Pa Holstein Association for 40 years. He raised pheasants for the Pennsylvania Game Commission for 12 years. Mr King was a former member of the school board of the Sparta School System and was a substitute teacher in Spartansburg for a short period in 1966. He was also the Sparta Township secretary for seventeen years and served as the Sparta Township supervisor for many years. In addition to his parents, his first wife, Jean Miller King, died in 1984 and two sisters, Verda Koehler and Velda Parson, and a brother, Clifford King, died previously. He is survived by his wife, Gladys M Beardsley King, whom he married May 24, 1985, in Youngsville; his stepmother, Anna King of West Liberty, Ohio; a daughter, Kelly D King of Titusville; two step-daughters, Mrs Donald (Cynthia) Miller of Canyon Lake, Ariz, and Mrs Jose (Sara Louise) Alvarez of Clifton, Ariz; a foster daughter, Donna Moline Higley of Corry; a son, David D King of Spartansburg; two step-sons, Timothy Miller of Centerville and Douglas Falconer of Globe, Ariz; one sister, Margaret Hornbeck of Rocky Ford, Colo; a half-sister, Martha King of West Liberty, Ohio; a brother, Eldon King of Conneaut Lake; five grandchilren; six step-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Bracken Funeral Home in Spartansburg...and attend a funeral service there on Monday at 11 am with Martin Murray, chaplain of Bruce Shorts Post 5958 VFW of Titusville, officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Spartansburg."
