Son of Elisha Mahoney and Rebecca Ann Weaver, William Mahoney was a native of Maryland.

He married Mary Elizabeth Peterson, April 14, 1862 in Cherry Hill Maryland. Their first child, Fannie Edith, was born in Maryland. In 1864, the family moved to Conshohocken, in Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, where Effie May and Sarah Rebecca were born. Mary Elizabeth died in Sept, 1871, a year after Sarah's birth.

On Dec. 24, 1875, William Mahoney married Virginia Matthews. Children with Virginia were Verna Lee and Arthur M. Mahoney. Virginia died in 1885.

In 1891, Mahoney married Rachel J. Weaver, his first cousin. The couple resided of a farm near Mechanics` Valley, in Cecil County. There were no children from this marriage.

Mahoney followed the occupations of carpenter, wheelwright and millwright.
