Last Will and Testament per West Virginia Will Books:
I Robert Shanklin of the county of Monroe do hereby make my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to pay
1st. I desire that my farm where I now live be equally divided between my four sons namely R.V. Shanklin, James S. Shanklin, Andrew D. Shanklin and Wm F. Shanklin and I further desire that A.D. Shanklin's portion be laid off for him where his improvements are without any additional valuation in consideration of the improvements and also Wm. F. Shanklins in like manner where my dwelling house is without any additional valuation in consideration of the improvements attached thereto.
2dly I desire that that portion of land laying in Madison county Indian be equally divided between Agnes Young and John S. Shanklin and I further desire that John S. Shanklin have a lot in Burlington IOA should it not be sold and if it be disposed of that he have the amount it brings.
3dly I will and bequeath to my daughter Mary A. Dunlap my black girl Amy to her and her heirs forever & I desire that Betsy P. Pack have Cloah. Should she not desire to take Cloah my desire is that someone of my children take her and pay Betsy Pack a fare price for her. My wish and desire is that my blacks be retained in my family.
4thly I will and bequeath to my daughter Sarah Thomas my two black children namely Rebecca Jane & Charles to her and her heirs forever. I further wish and desire that my house hold furniture be equally divided between my three daughters which live in this county namely Betsy Pack, Sarah Thomas & Mary A. Dunlap after James S. Shanklin and Wm. F. Shanklin get a bed apiece and such furniture as the rest of my children got. I give to my son Wm. F. the clock, the cupboard, the family Bible, and my best table. What books I have I wish to be equally divided between my sons and daughters who live in this state.
5thly I desire that my interest in a hundred acres of land laying in Mercer County when sold the money be equally divided between my four daughters and I further desire what property I may have on lands or held by my son Wm F. Shanklin be valued back again to me or my heirs by R.V. Shanklin or James S. Shanklin and be equally divided between my four daughters and any other I may have I also wish to go to my daughters. My wish and desire is that my blacksmith tools remain where they are an my four sons who remain in this county have equal privilege in working on them and equal interest in them.
6thly I wish and desire that my executors pay to my daughter Agnes Young one hundred dollars & also to my son John S. Shanklin four hundred dollars to be paid to them out of the money I may have on hands & should there be any over plus after my funeral expenses & just debts are paid, I desire it to be equally divided between my four daughters. My desire is that my two eldest sons administer on my estate and as I have the utmost confidence in my sons I do not desire that they shall give security.

An appendex or codicil to my will or testament bearing date the 12 the day of June 1849. From certain transactions which have taken place in my business since the above period refered to causes me to make the following alterations & additions. My first wish is that the lands left to my four sons living in this county & state be so divided that each have part of the low lands or bottoms with the additions of an equal division of the uplands so as to make each one past equal in value with the exception of the buildings. I further desire that Andrew D. & Wm. F. Shanklin have my ban equally between them. Secondly, I desire that John Henry my yellow boy go to Sarah Thomas my daughter in lieu of Charles who is now dead. Thirdly I desire that Mary A. Pack have her grandmother's side saddle. Fourthly I desire that Andrew D. & Wm F. Shanklin have my blacksmith tools in place of the way they stand in my will and I further wish that Wm. F. Shanklin have my wagon. Fifthly, my desire is that my daughter Agnes Young have five hundred dollars as her portion in thge place of the legacy left to her in my will. Sixthly, I desire that my two sons to wit Richard V. & James S. Shanklin pay one hundred dollars each to my son John S. Shanklin and then that he have eight hundred dollars more out of the sales of my lands in the ?? of the legacy left to him in my will so as to make him one thousand dollars in all.
