In 1915 the future General George Patton was returning from a polo game when his car overturned. He was found by a stranger and was brought to the nearby Rice home, where he was said to be more dead than alive. Anne Rice found that he was strangling on car oil in his throat and saved his life. When Anne was killed in a horseback riding accident in 1933, Patton traveled to Massachusetts to the funeral, saying he would have never missed it even if he had to travel half the world to be there.
