John Jackson Redwine was born March 12, 1892 in Commanche County, Texas. His father was John Jackson Redwine, Sr. and his mother Annie Belle Smith. Children born to this union were: L.B., O.W., G.W., Ellen E., John Jackson, Jr., C.M., J.D., and Carrie B. Annie Belle Smith died March 20, 1900.
John Jackson, Sr. married Vina M. (Moore) (Blevins) on October 7, 1900. To this union were born E.H., P.A., twins I.C. and Iva Chloe, and Kirby Raymond.
Minnie Love Armstrong was born on July 31, 1894 in Eddyville, Kentucky. Her parents were Charles Warrington and Alma (Dunn) Armstrong. She was the fourth child of the family of eight children. Her sisters were Grace, Lena Mae, and Allie Beatrice, and her brothers were Gentry, Johnnie, Goebel, and Herschel. Minnie was thirteen years old when her mother died, the year after they moved from Kentucky to Memphis, Texas. Minnie became a second mother to the family. She learned to be an excellent cook; she sewed, mended, and was a perfectionist at housekeeping.
J.J. and Minnie were married on June 16, 1912, on the front porch of Mr. Redwine's home. It was on a Sunday, so they invited the church congregation home with them after the morning services. The wedding was performed and everyone was invited for the meal, after which they attended the evening church services.
The couple was blessed with fiften children of which thirteen reached adulthood. They reared them according to Bible teachings and stern discipline.
Nine of the children were born in Hall County, Texas and made the move to the Plains (Castro County) by wagon and horses except for the women folk who rode in Mr. Armstrong's Model T car.
The family lived in Hale County where they worked for a dairy. Once they paid on a farm at Ft. Sumner, New Mexico and came back to Lubbock County during the fall to work in harvest. They intended to return to New Mexico but three of the sons, J.C., Eugene, and Glen Earl, and a daughter, Wanell, were involved in a car accident and Glen Earl's back was broken so they stayed in Texas.
In 1941 the Redwines moved to Old Hurley--six miles northwest of Muleshoe--in the house that had been planned to be the courthouse. The house was two story, surrounded by orchard, large truck patch garden, and tree lined boundary.
Deretha, Jerrel, Burrel, Wanell, Billie Rae, and Homer attended the Progress school.
In 1947 they built a home in Progress. Here they also had an orchard, garden, milk cows and chickens for their livelihood. They attended church in Muleshoe as there was only a union church held in the Progress school.
In 1949 the Baptists began holding Sunday School in the home of families in the community; then in the fall they held a revival on the porch of the Redwine home. The Progress Baptist Church was organized.
The home at Progress burned in 1950 and most of the personal possessions were destroyed. Later a ready built house was moved onto the original site.
J.J. Redwine was elected constable of Bailey County in 1955 and served consecutively from January 17, 1955 to his death on September 16, 1964. He held this office with pride and honor and was very loyal to his constituents and fellow officers.
Mrs. Redwine's home, family, and church were always the center of her life. She remained faithful in attendance and support of her church, the Trinity Baptist Church, although she never drove and depended on her friends and the bus to get her to regular service on Sunday, Wednesday night, Woman's Missionary Union, and sang in the choir until she was almost 86 years old. She had a natural talent to play the guitar, fiddle, banjo, and piano and loved to play with a group of friends for church, or the "old folks" home. Others who played in the group were Mrs. Odessa Slayden, Mrs. Tye Young, and Mrs. Eva Ashford.
She felt that praying for others was not only a privilege but her solemn duty. Her love and prayers during her life blessed so many.
