EAST LIVERPOOL – Lifetime area resident JEANNETTE CARMEN BURKS HICKS, of West Eighth Street, East Liverpool, passed away at 4:46 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2010 at the Cleveland Clinic, following a lengthy illness. She was 68.

Born here on October 20, 1941, she was a daughter of the late James C. and Alice A. Mahoney Burks. A 1959 graduate of East Liverpool High School, Jeanette was very involved in the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association.

A ward clerk at East Liverpool City Hospital for 34 years, she attended Lee's Chapel A.M.E. Church in Wellsville.

Surviving her at home is her husband, Walter "Sonny" Hicks, whom she married on January 8, 1966.

There are two daughters whom she cherished, Jacqueline Hicks of East Liverpool, and Jennifer Hicks and her fiancé, Robert Alexander, of Youngstown.

Four sisters survive as well: Billie Rose, of New Brighton, PA, Carole Miller and her husband, Robert, of Shaker Heights, OH, Norrine Gilham and her husband, Sylvester, of Streetsboro, OH, and Betty Wright and her husband, Harold, of Wellsville, along with one brother, James Burks of New Brighton, PA. She will also be missed by her pet dog, SeaSea.

Jeanette was preceded in death in 1987 by her son, Kevin Burks, as well as her sister, Carletta Arrington, who died in 2009.

Pastor Darlene Zanders of Mount Sinai FBH Church in Wellsville will officiate at a celebration of Jeanette's life at 11:00 am. Wednesday at the Dawson Funeral Home.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Burial will take place at Columbiana County Memorial Park, followed by a continued time of fellowship at the Dawson Family Center.
