Son of Asa and Fannie Coker Cobb. Fannie Coker was said to have Cherokee heritage, however, there is no known proof of this fact. DNA tests of descendants have shown no trace of Native American ancestry.

In the "History of Fentress County" by A. R. Hogue (1916) he states "Jesse Cobb came from Tuscaloosa Alabama in about 1818. He married a Stephens and settled in the Poplar Cove, where the Cobb's have since resided. He was Register of the county before the war and a well-to-do farmer. He fought under Jackson at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. He was a democrat and attended the convention that instructed the State for James K. Polk."
