James M Stokes, Sr, 82, of Brownstown, formerly of St Elmo, died at 4 pm Tuesday, May 2, in Belleville Memorial hospital.
He was born Sept 10, 1895, in Bingham to Joseph and Nevada Harris Stokes. He was a member of the Macedonia Christian
church and a former teacher and retired farmer. He married Clara Tackett on June 21, 1913, in Vandalia.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Earl of Brownstown, Burl of Creve Coeur, and Madison of Morton; two daughters, Eileen Wilkinson of East Peoria, and Laurel Lorey of Joliet; three sisters, Lurana Hicks of Decatur, Thelma Baughner of Hillsboro, and Ida Stokes of Flora; 18 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
A son preceded him in death.
