HADLEY - Alfred I. Szarkowski, 80, of Hadley passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at Cooley Dickinson Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born in Hadley on July 31, 1929, the son of the late Andrew & Konstance (Chrzonowski) Szarkowski. He was a lifelong Hadley resident and was educated in local schools. Al worked in the art department at Amherst College for over 30 years prior to his retirement. A lifelong communicant of Most Holy Redeemer Church in Hadley, Al was a tireless worker at the church. He was a longtime choir member, called bingo for many years and any little odd job that needed to be done at the church, Al was there. He served the town of Hadley as a longtime member of the Board of Health and volunteered on the North Hadley Fire Department. He was a Little League coach for many years, a member of the Polish American Citizens club of Hadley and a member of the former Hadley Sportsmen's Association.

He leaves several nieces and nephews, including his caregiver, Beverly Rhodes of Hadley and a niece, Andrea Krawczyk of South Deerfield, as well as several other nieces and nephews. He also leaves a brother, Ralph Szarkowski. He was predeceased by his siblings, Marion Krawczyk, Christine Anisowicz, Phyllis Jasinski, Sabina Kulon, Edward, John and Joseph Szarkowski.

The family invites you to join them on Friday morning at 10 a.m. at Most Holy Redeemer Church in Hadley to celebrate a Liturgy of Christian Burial for Al. Burial will follow in Holy Rosary Cemetery. At Al's request calling hours will be omitted. Donations in Al's memory may be made to the Hadley Council on Aging, 46 Middle St., Hadley, MA 01035. The Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton has been entrusted with arrangements.
