Per Morgan County Citizen:

June 15, 1919 – May 5, 2010
Born June 15, 1919, James ("Jim") Charles Conrads grew up in St. Louis, Mo., and attended St. Mary's High School. A self-made man, he began his work career as a mail clerk with the Fulton Bag & Cotton Mill and soon became a salesman.

Drafted into the Army Signal Corps in World War II, he was stationed initially at the Panama Canal. He later graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant from Officer Candidate School. Assigned to General Patton's Army in Europe, he joined the newly formed Signal Information and Monitoring Company.

After the war, he resumed his career with Fulton Bag. In 1948, he married Virginia ("Jinny") Mae Lane, a former ballet dancer for the St. Louis Municipal Opera. They moved to Florissant, Mo., where their first three children were born. Mr. Conrads served on City Council and was elected Mayor. The family moved to Chicago in 1951 when he became Sales Manager for Central Bag & Burlap. In 1954, after the birth of another child, the family moved to Gainesville, where he opened a new branch. Their fifth child was born in 1960.

Seeing the decline in the burlap bag business, Mr. Conrads opened the Steel Products Company in rapidly growing Atlanta to supply the building industry with formed steel. He served for many years on the Steel Service Center Institute's Board of Directors and held various elected positions including president of the organization. In the early '80s, Reliance Steel of California bought Steel Products.

An astute businessman, Mr. Conrads successfully invested in stocks and land. Always an entrepreneur, he loved the challenge of turning a poor performing company into a profitable one and sharing that success with his employees. His hard work, forward-thinking vision, and leadership skills culminated in a family partnership insuring that the wealth he and his wife worked so hard to create will survive and continue to grow for generations to come.
Mr. Conrads was actively involved in the Catholic Church and served on parish councils and boards in Gainesville and at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta. He was instrumental in the formation and building of St. James Catholic Church in Madison, and was a charter member and active promoter of the Serra Club in Atlanta. In recognition of his generosity and spiritual and religious pursuits, he was inducted as a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

Both he and his wife were philanthropists and supportive members of their community. The Conrads Family Fund of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta was established to provide grants to charitable organizations.
Mr. Conrads has been a member of the Elks Club and Polar Bear Club in Gainesville. Always ready for a good game of golf, he was a member of the East Lake Country Club which became the Atlanta Athletic Club, Capital City Club, Fripp Island Club, and a founding member of the Chattahoochee Country Club. He was residing at his farm in Rutledge, at the time of his death.

Mr. Conrads was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Virginia "Jinny" Conrads, in April 2009. Survivors include brother-in-law Paul Rafter; children Karen Conrads Wibell and her husband, Peter O. Wibell, Heitzso, Linda A. Conrads, Nancy Conrads Pendergast, Michael C. Conrads and his wife, Cindy Beatty Conrads; grandchildren Katie and Sarah Wibell, Aaron and Michael Harden, Tripp, Jim, Meghan, and David Pendergast and Nick and Jenny Conrads.

Visitation was from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 10, and was followed by a rosary at A.E. Carter Funeral Home, 1670 Atlanta Highway, Madison, (706) 752-1790. Funeral mass was 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 11, at the Cathedral of Christ the King, 2699 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta. A brief reception at the church was followed by internment at Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. James Catholic Church, 562 Vine Street, Madison, GA 30650 or to The Morgan County Fund of The Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta, c/o The Center, 2104 Washington Street, SW, Covington, GA 30014, (770) 788-2250.
