The obituary for Jesse D. Clem stated that he had died Oct. 10 at his home in Ash Grove township. He was born in Carroll Co., KY, Jan. 26, 1848, being a son of Jacob T. and Mary Lee Clem. He was 73 years, 8 months, and 14 days old. When a small lad his parents came to Illinois, first settling in Cumberland county, where they resided 13 years. They then moved to Moultrie county and in 1871 the family came to Shelby county, settling in Ash Grove township. Mr. Clem and Miss Gabriella Wilson were married in 1875. Three children, Samuel E., Frank, and Louetta, now Mrs. Fred W. Bennett, were born to them. Early in 1886 Mrs. Clem died and on Dec. 22, 1887, Mr. Clem and Miss Martha Ella Storm were married. Their children were Mrs. Mina [C. C.] Storm of Ash Grove, Mrs. Mary [R. W.] Fleming of Rockford, Hester, Inez, Edith, Fletcher, Mildred, Gilbert, Gerald, and Zella at home. Mr. Clem was a progressive farmer. In early manhood he united with the Christian church and took an active part in church affairs and in religious work. He was a singer of more than ordinary ability, not only having a cultivated tenor voice but having the skill to lead. Early in life, residing near Gays, he directed the choir of the Christian church in that village for a long time. Moving to Ash Grove church neighborhood he united with the Ash Grove church and from 1875 he directed the choir at that place. Many people could trace their love for music to the training they received from Mr. Clem. His home was a place where vocal and instrumental music predominated and it was believed that all the children either could sing or play an instrument. Funeral and burial services were held at Ash Grove with the elders acting as pallbearers. Windsor Gazette - 13 Oct 1921
