Bessie Berniece Holcomb

Wenatchee

Bessie Berniece Holcomb, age 96, of Wenatchee passed away Sunday, March 12, 2006, at Western Saddlerock Home following an extended illness. She had been a resident of the Wenatchee Valley for 70 years. Bessie was born to Robert and Almena (Redmon) Keller on Feb. 4, 1910, in Jackson County, Kansas. She attended school in Kansas, where she became a country teacher, teaching the first eight grades in a single room school on the Potawatomi Indian Reservation. On April 28, 1936, Bessie married Homer Roy Holcomb in Holton, Kansas.

Following their wedding, they moved to the Wenatchee Valley where they raised their four children, LeRoy, Marilyn, Janet and Larry. They both worked in the fruit industry until Homer's employment with the Chelan County PUD. Bessie spent most of her adult life working in the home caring for her family. In 1965, after 29 years of marriage, Homer passed away from cancer.

Bessie and Homer enjoyed traveling together back to Kansas to see family, and to the ocean. Together they enjoyed collecting rocks, shells, and interesting pieces of wood. Bessie was a member of Astral Chapter of Eastern Star, and a member of First Presbyterian Church. Bessie was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; four sisters; and her husband. She is survived by her sister, Helen; her sons, LeRoy (Mical) Holcomb, and Larry (Claudia) Holcomb; her daughters, Marilyn (Murl) Anderson, and Janet Holcomb. Her legacy includes nine grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at Jones and Jones Mortuary on Thursday, March 16, 2006, at 1:00 p.m., with viewing on Wednesday, March 15, 2006, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
