Sgt. Derek L. Shanfield, 22, of Hastings, Pa., died June 8 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan: He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. He is survived by his parents, David and Pamela (Carpinello) Shanfield of Hastings; brothers, Sgt. Sydney Shanfield of Twentynine Palms, Calif., and Cpl. Devin Shanfield of Camp Lejeune, N.C.; and sisters, Jessica Petro of Laurel, Md., and Allison Shanfield of Hastings. He also is survived by grandparents, Yale and Hallett Shanfield and Nancy Carpinello, and a niece, Sadie Petro.
