Another Confederate Soldier Answers the Last Roll Call

This appeared in the August 3, 1918 McCurtain County Gazatte:
Died July 23rd at the home of his son, Hezekiah, near Garvin, Mr.Thomas W. Whitley, aged eighty-four. Mr. Whitley was a native of North Carolina, served through the war, in the Confederate Army. He lived for a time in Alabama and moved to Texas in 1878. From Texas he moved to near the present site of Gillham, Sevier, Arkansas, in 1880.

Mr. Whitley was a Mason when he came to Arkansas, and was one of the first members of the Silver Hill Lodge, which moved to Gillham when that town was founded. Mr. Whitley maintained his health and strength until two years ago when he moved to Oklahoma, where he died, leaving a wife and seven children to mourn his loss. It was the writer's privilege to have known Mr. Whitley for nearly forty years and as a Christian, a Mason and a neighbor he had but few peers.

Farewell Comrade! You have answered the last roll call and only a few old comrades are left to join you in the great beyond.
