"Edgar (1851-1935) and Elizabeth (1851-1938) Abernethy grew up in Christ's Church. Both were grandchildren of Miles Abenethy who was listed as one of the founding members. Yes, they were first cousins. Edgar's father was Martin Luther Abernethy. (The first) Rules and regulations (for this church) were adopted at a meeting held September 18, 1858. Elizabeth's father, David M. Abernethy, was elected as the first secretary of the congregation. He held that office until his death in 1876. Edgar and Elizabeth lived beside Little Mountain just off the Alexis-Lucia Road. They were faithful to attend even though it was normal for them and their family to walk a distance of about four miles to church. A wagon was not used because the family had only one horse and it had to work so hard on the farm during the week, a day of rest was absolutely necessary. Both died in the 1930s and were buried in the church cemetery. Economic times were terrible at that time as the Great Depression roared on. No grave markers were placed; as family members died, their final resting place was lost. The descendants of Edgar and Elizabeth were later to begin an annual reunion. Around the turn of the century, the group decided to make a concentrated effort to find the gravesites and took up funds sufficient for a headstone. With incredible luck, an older family member was found who remembered the plot but only the general area. The site was quickly discovered and an appropriate stone now marks their final resting place."
