Gale arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
The battalion was participating in Operation Scotland II and when Gale died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the body from a a hostile explosive device.

Survived by his mother, Peggy M Weitzel and his 2 brothers; Daryle W Craun and Charles W Craun all of Portland, OR and his half sister; Myrna who died at the Oregon State Hospital and was cremated.
His father; Charles R Craun of unknown address.
His brother Charles served in the US Army, as a PFC from 1964-1967.
