At one point he was hospitalized in Washington DC, reason as yet unknown, but honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-eight at an unstated location. mustered into federal service at Carlisle April 5, 1865, as a private with Co. I, 149th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 24, 1865.

Ellen died in 1880, and he married Mary Ann Strayer, fathering Annie Irena (b. 05/10/81 - married John Irvin Sheely).

On his last day, he told his wife. "I wish I was in heaven," then went to his stable where he hung himself with a set of driving lines. His son Charles discovered the body. Samuel had been a member of York's Sedgwick Post No. 37, G.A.R.
