EXETER, N.H. — Ann Cluett Burroughs died at her home in Exeter, New Hampshire, on Friday, June 5. She was 98 years old.

Mrs. Burroughs, known to everyone as Nancy, was the wife of the late Rt. Rev. Nelson M. Burroughs, seventh Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio, who predeceased her in 1998 after 59 years of marriage. She was the daughter of the late Congressman E. Harold Cluett and Margaret Gorham Cluett of Troy, New York, where Mrs. Burroughs was born on April 1, 1912. In addition to representing his upstate New York congressional district in the US House of Representatives, her father was vice-president of the family business, Cluett Peabody and Co., which made Arrow shirts.

She received her education at the Emma Willard School in Troy and graduated from Westover School in Middlebury, Connecticut, where she remained active as Class Agent for most of her life.

Mrs. Burroughs was married in 1938 at St. John's Episcopal Church, Troy, New York, where Mr. Burroughs was the minister of that parish. On their delayed honeymoon to Europe, they barely escaped the blockade shortly before World War II was declared. A relative who ran the Holland American line provided emergency passage for them on the last passenger ship to leave Europe. She served on numerous church boards and committees. Mr. Burroughs was next called as rector of Christ Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, where their four children were born. In 1949, Mr. Burroughs was called to be Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio, which necessitated a move to Cleveland, Ohio, where they resided for eighteen years before retiring to Chatham in 1968.

Mrs. Burroughs and her husband purchased their home in Chatham, Massachusetts, in 1957. She still owned the home with her son at her death and continued to spend summers in Chatham until several years ago. An active sportswoman all her life, she was best known for her prowess on the tennis court. She was a member of the Chatham Beach and Tennis Club and the Chatham Paddle Tennis group at Eastward Ho! Country Club, where she was also a member. She was a communicant at Christ Church, Exeter, New Hampshire, and St. Christopher's Church in Chatham.

She is survived by her three children: Anita B. Fahy of South Chatham and Center Ossipee, New Hampshire, Margaret G. Burroughs of Brunswick, Maine, and Timothy R. Burroughs and his wife Thea, of New York City and Chatham, as well as by five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her third child, Robert Nelson Burroughs, who died in Vietnam in 1968 at the age of 23, and by her five siblings.

The funeral service will be held at the Sibley Chapel of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church on Main Street in Chatham on Wednesday, June 9, at 11 a.m. with private burial in Seaside Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Westover School, 1237 Whittemore Road, Middlebury, CT 06762; St. John's Church, 146 First Street, Troy NY 12180; or St. Christopher's Church, 625 Main Street, Chatham MA 02633.
