Alice Booth Beddes
December 20, 1849- June 16, 1906

Alice Booth was born 20 Dec 1849, in Middleton, Lancashire, England, the second child, of six, of William Booth and Elizabeth Highton. Alice's parents were baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1847. The family immigrated to America in 1864 aboard the General McClellan with President Cannon in charge.

After a 12-day stay in Wyoming, Nebraska, the Booth family joined the Joseph S. Rawlins Company and departed for the Salt Lake Valley, 15 July 1864. About 400 individuals and about 50 wagons were in the company when it began its journey from the outfitting post at Wyoming, Nebraska (the west bank of the Missouri River about 40 miles south of Omaha.) They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley 19-20 Sep 1864.

Alice's aunt, Alice Booth Robinson and her husband, Joseph Robinson, were one of the first settlers of Plain City, Weber, Utah. It seems that they wrote to their relatives in England, urging them to also come to Plain City. Brothers Henry Booth and David Booth were already living in Plain City when the William Booth family arrived.

In 1864, Alice was 15 years old, just the age for the young James Seth Beddis, also one of the early settlers of Plain City, to notice. A romance soon blossomed, and James and Alice were married on 18 Nov 1866, presumably in Plain City.

Some of the settlers became discouraged with conditions in Plain City and decided to move to Cache Valley. James Seth and Alice must have gone with this group, for their first child, James Seth Beddes, Jr. was born in 1867 in Hyde Park, Cache, Utah. The baby only lived three months, dying 11 Feb 1868. Their next two children were also born in Hyde Park--Alice Susannah, born 19 Apr 1869, and Thomas William, born 3 Feb 1871. They family is found living in Hyde Park on the 1870 Census. James is age 27. At this time, the family was spelling their name "Beddis."

They lived in Hyde Park until about 1871 when they moved to Benson. The rest of their children were born in Benson--Joseph Robinson, 23 October 1872; David Hyrum, 1 September 1874; Heber Booth, 20 December 1876; Henry Cole, 23 October 1878; and Absalum Burris, 2 July 1881. Absalum only lived seven months, dying 23 March 1882. Ann Elizabeth was born 18 Feb 1883; Sarah Jane and John George (twins) were born 9 March 1885.

Seth and Alice Beddes (Notice spelling has changed from Beddis to Beddes and James is going by Seth.) are found in the 1880 Census in Benson. James Seth is 38; Alice, 30; and their children are: Alice S., age 11; Thomas W., age 9; Joseph R., age 7; David H., age 5; Heber B., age 3; and Henry C., age 1.

James died in Benson, Cache, Utah, 7 Jan 1889, at the age of 47 leaving Alice with nine children to raise, the youngest, twins, were only four years old. According to James' grandson, Heber Booth Beddes, Jr., James died from complications of diabetes.

Alice didn't remarry and died 16 Jun 1906, at the age of 57, in Victor, Idaho. Two of her children, Heber and David, moved to Victor. She was probably living with one of them when she died.
