On October 16, 1940 at the age of 34, James registered for the first peacetime military draft in the history of the United States. His registration card was completed at precinct S-16 in Timpson and noted his residence as Route 2, Timpson and that he was self-employed. He was described as white, six foot, one and one-half inches tall, weighing 145 pounds with hazel eyes and brown hair.
James was inducted into the US Army at the age of 37 on April 26, 1944. All that is known of his military service is that he served with the 129 Evacuation Hospital until honorable discharge, November 10, 1944. He attained the rank of Technician Fifth Class.
James Clyde passed on December 17, 1954 at the age of 48 and was buried in the Corinth Cemetery, Timpson, Shelby County, Texas. Wife Mildred would follow in 2005. Day is done, God is nigh.
