Richard F. Ay, Machinist, Dies
Richard Frederick Ay, Leola R1, area machine shop owner and engineer, died Friday in Ephrata Community Hospital after a year's illness.
Ay was the father of Miss America of 1954, Evelyn Ay. His first wife, Paula Lutteke Ay, died in 1966.
Born in Konigsberg, Germany, he was the son of the late Fritz and Anna Ay. He served in the German Army in World War I and was a prisoner of war for three years.
From 1937 to 1970 he lived in Ephrata. He was a chief engineer on Atlantic Refining Corp. tankers for 15 years and later was master mechanic for Atlantic's area pipeline.
COMPANY FOUNDED
In 1955, he founded and was vice president of the Ay Machine Tool Co., of Ephrata.
He is a former member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He also was a member of the Ephrata Lions Club, Trinity Lutheran Church, Ephrata, and Lancaster Leiderkrantz.
He is survived by his widow, Anna Baum Ay, and two children, Evelyn M., wife of Carl S. Sempier, Berwyn, and Richard W., Lititz R4.
He is also survived by a step-son Douglas L. Baum, Leola R1; a brother, Frank, Mays Landing, N.J.; and two sisters, Herta and Lisa, of Villengen, Germany.
Four grandchildren also survive.
