Dies Yesterday Morning at Coffeyville Hospital; Was Injured in a Fall Monday Morning

James E. Hartley, who received a brain concussion in a fall Monday, died yesterday (Friday, December 25, 1942), at 9:25 o'clock at the Southeast Kansas Hospital in Coffeyville. He was taken to the hospital Thursday (December 24, 1942) night at 11 o'clock and pneumonia was given as the cause of death.

Mr. Hartley was found early Monday (December 21, 1942) morning lying unconscious on the north platform of the Santa Fe depot where he had fallen on the icy pavement while on his way to work. He was found by L.L. Burton, Claude Johnson and George Bell, who summoned Dr. W.G. Norman. Mr. Hartley was taken to his home at 323 East Second street in the McDaniel Ambulance, and it was found that he was suffering from a brain concussion. He regained consciousness Tuesday (December 22, 1942), but remained in a very weak condition.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Melvina Hartley; two sons, Joseph of Coffeyville and Avery, who resides in California; two daughters, Mrs. W.V. (Nadine) Fleenor and Mrs. Alfred (Joyce) Harris of Yakima, Washington; two brothers Henry Hartley and Tom Hartley both of Troy, Missouri; one sister Mrs. Sarah Brown, of Troy. He is also survived by seven grandchildren (Randall Dean Hartley, Virgil Julius Fleenor, Stanley Merwin Fleenor, Frank E. Hartley, Betty Jo Hartley, Shirley Hartley, and Lorraine DeAun (Reeves) Wade) and one great-grandchild (Joycelllen DeAun Wade). One sister (Martha Lee "Mattie" (Hartley) Allen) preceded him in death.

He was born January 14, 1872, in Hawk Point, Missouri. He had lived in Cherryvale about 30 years, and for many years was employed at Pickerell's music store. He was married to his second wife Melvina Bailey January 14, 1942.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday (December 30, 1942) afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Presbyterian Church with Rev. D.D. Swinney officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery by the McDaniel funeral directors.

Mr. Hartley's son will come from California to attend the funeral.
