John was the son of Moses & Fannie Cheatham Grimes. He married Katie Harrigan, the daughter of Daniel & Lydia Zike Harrigan, on March 14, 1892. After Katie passed away, John moved to Cincinnati where his mother and several of his siblings were living.
He married Ida Sophia "Edith" Nebel. She and John lost, at least, two children to stillbirth. She gave birth to a healthy son, Carl Nebel Grimes, by C-section in 1916. Sadly, Ida passed away from the effects of hemorrhagic shock, four days after Carl's birth.
Mr. Grimes married Martha and they, along with Carl, lived in Cincinnati. When his father passed away, John inherited part of the land. He, Martha and Carl moved to Jessamine County and made their home there. Mr. Grimes passed away from the effects of acute indigestion, with a duration of thirty minutes.
