Mary Mae Lantz was born on January 25, 1873, in Putnam County, Ohio to Peter and Ella Lantz. Her father was a veteran of the Union forces during the Civil War. Returning from the war, he took to the ministry and in the late 1870s located the family to Blue Springs in Gage County, Nebraska. Spending some ten years in Blue Springs, the family moved further west in the late 1880s, this time to Hayes County Nebraska.

Mae married Elexis Oroph Hanna on January 19, 1890. Taking advantage of opening land , the couple settled in 1894 on a homestead four miles north of Wauneta, Nebraska. Living in a sod house, 10 children, (one son and nine daughters) would be raised there.

Mary went by the name of "Mae". Her daughter, Myrtle, told of Mae baking bread daily and selling loaves for 10 cents apiece. She was also extremely superstitious - 13 chairs at a table wouldn't do!

Mae died on September 4, 1923, in Wauneta, Nebraska, at the age of 50, and is buried at Riverside Cemetery.
