Mrs. Heard was given a historic farm and house by her husband, Leighton Heard, who was given these assets by his father, John S. Heard. John S. Heard was given the assets by his father, the one who worked to purchase the 810 acre farm. He built a house on the land. In addition to farming his grandfather's land, John S. Heard, Sr. operated Heard's Ferry (formerly Isom's Ferry) across the Chattahoochee River for 50 years. One of the wives of Mr. Heard, Sr. was an Isom. John S. Heard had 23 children and died in 1931 at age 97.
