Israel was an identical twin who came to the USA through a circuitous route. Born in Kovno, Russia, the family went to Manchester England when the boys were in their teens. Israel married there and then immigrated to Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 1900 with his wife's family. They returned to Manchester after several years and then in 1909 he left for the US, bringing his family over in 1910. His twin, Eli, stayed in England and although the brothers stayed in touch by writing, they never saw each other again. Israel and Kate settled in Los Angeles, where they owned a small market in Boyle Heights.
