At the time of his birth, the community of Moore was known as Quincy, named for the city in Illinois. Prior to passing the civil service examination and being appointed a substitute railway postal clerk on 14 November 1912, he worked around his father's store at Moore, was a farmer/stockman, taught in the rural Arkansas schools, and served two terms as deputy assessor of Newton County, AR. Following various assignments in Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri, he received his appointment as postal inspector on 2 July 1923, assigned to the Chicago Division. After weeks of training and several special assignments, he was assigned to the area which included the nine counties in southern Illinois, headquartered at Carbondale. In 1927, he was transferred to East Saint Louis, IL, and a year later to St. Louis, MO. Following transfers to Fort Smith, AR and a five-year stint in Phoenix, AZ, he was transferred to Los Angeles, CA on 1 August 1934. He retired after more than forty years of service with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring as the postal inspector in Los Angeles, California on 31 July 1953. He was known to his fellow employees as thorough; a good law enforcement officer, and was considered an authority on postal laws and regulations and accounting procedures.
