Gurnsey Harlan Abbott, 93, of Parma, died Friday, December 13, 1991 at a Caldwell care center. Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 17, 1991 at Sterry Memorial Presbyterian Church, Roswell. Private interment will be at the Roswell Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell. Officiating will be Rev. William Webster of Sterry Memorial Presbyterian Church and Rev. Ray Wilson of Ontario, Oregon.
Mr. Abbott was born May 31, 1898 at Chenoa, Illinois to Arthur C. and Ina Abbott. In 1900, he came with his parents to Idaho and they established a home on a farm just west of Roswell. He received his elementary and high school education at Roswell and was in the first graduating class of the Roswell High School in 1916. He then attended college in Redlands, California for one year and then went to Oregon State University in Corvallis where he graduated in 1920. While enrolled there he was in the Army Training Program and then served during World War I.
He married Rita Fletcher in August of 1920 in Salem Oregon and they returned to Roswell where he started farming and raised their family. He was always interested in community affairs. Mr. Abbott served many years on the School Board, was secretary and a board member of the Riverside Drainage and Irrigation Districts for twenty-nine years, served on the Roswell Cemetery Board for many years and was also active in the Senior Citizens functions and the Historical Society. He was a member of Sterry Memorial Presbyterian Church for seventy years and served as an elder for several terms.
Mr. Abbott is survived by all of his eight children; Marvin Abbott and wife, Arlene of Parma; Orville Abbott of Carmichael, California; Norman Abbot and wife, Katherine of Meridian, Ardith and husband, David Fretwell of Marysville, Washington, Walter Abbott and wife, Sheila of Parma, Leslie Abbott of Parma, Raymond Abbott and wife, Margie of Parma, and Irma and J.D. Scott of Caldwell; twenty six grandchildren, fifty great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1952, his father in 1906 and his mother in 1917.
