ABILENE ~~ Mrs. Juanita Cook Woodle, 94, died Friday, October 3, 2008. Services were held Wednesday, October 8, at 10 a.m. at the Elliott-Hamil Chapel in Abilene. Burial was held in Colorado City.

Juanita, or Nita as she liked to be called, was born on March 7, 1914, in the Silver Community on the Cook Ranch, 17 miles southeast of Colorado City, to Bessie and Harvey Andrew Cook, Sr. The family moved to Colorado City, where Nita graduated from hgh school in 1931. She loved to tell stories about when her father had been the Deputy Sheriff of Colorado City and she and her siblings had entertained the inmates with their skits and songs.

Nita attended Cisco Junior College, then Randolph Junior College, and Texas Tech. She was a Civil Service employee, retiring from her last assignment as executive secretary to the Dyess AFB Hospital Commander in December 1980. In her more than 30 years of service, Nita worked for the Navy, the Army and the Air Force, with assignments in Lubbock and Port Arthur, Texas; Laurinburg-Maxton AFB in North Carolina; the Air Transport Command in Miami Beach, Florida; and Second Army Headquarters at Ft. George G. Meade, Maryland. But she loved West Texas and was delighted to return home in the summer of 1963.

Nita was a member of the West Texas Genealogical Society and loved playing bridge. She was devoted to her parents and to her only great grandchild, Olivia. In retirement, Nita traveled all over the world and especially enjoyed visiting Austria.

Survivors include her daughter, Andrea St. Lawrence; grandson, John St Lawrence III and wife, Jennifer; great granddaughter, Olivia of Round Rock; son Jack of Austin; cousin, Ruby Jo Day of Abilene; sister-in-law, Evelyn Cook of Houston; nephews, Keith Cook and Carlton Cook; nieces, Linda Watson and Gwen Watson Kealy.

Nita was preceded in death by her parents, Bessie and Harvey Andrew Cook, Sr.; her brother, (Ret) Col. Harvey Andrew Cook, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made to the Abilene Animal Shelter or the Heart of West Texas Museum.
