Joyce and her twin sister, Bernice, were the sixth and seventh children born to John and Belva (Hanstad) Thompson. They were born at Grand Forks, ND, confirmed at the Sand Hill Lutheran Church in 1941 and graduated from Climax High School in 1945. Joyce married Robert Hutchison of Caledonia, ND, on August 14, 1949 at the First Presbyterian Church in Crookston, Minnesota by Rev. Stewart Robertson. Following their marriage, they lived for a time on a farm near Caledonia and later at Fargo, ND. Joyce and Bob had five children: Gary, Keith, Kevin, Bradley and Barbara.
