"Davis," as he was commonly called, was the eighth of twelve children born to Zebulon and Deliverance (Rich) Millett. In 1836, he married Elethear True, who died in 1841, followed a few months later by their one-year-old son. Davis remarried to Lusina Phllips in 1852. Their only child, Elethear, was born in 1853.

Davis was a reasonably prosperous farmer. The 1858 and 1873 landownership maps showed he lived on the northern end of what is today called North Road. The town history described him as having a genial nature, an upright nature, and was universally respected through his long and useful life. He was the last serving deacon of the Union Chapel of North Leeds.

He was very close to his brother Asa, who lived in Massachusetts. Asa named a son Francis Davis Millett. The nephew was a man of numerous accomplishments, including that he as an excellent painter, author and war correspondent. The nephew lost his life in the sinking of the Titanic.
