Elmer L. Hawpe of Scott City, Kan., son of Mrs. Nellie Brooks of Burlington, passed away Thursday, Nov. 24 at the Veterans Hospital in Wichita, Kan., after a short illness. Final rites were conducted Sunday, Nov. 27, at the Weinmann Price Funeral Home in Scott City; with Rev. Robert E. Brown officiating at the 2:30 services.
Elmer L. Hawpe was born Aug. 17, 1919, in Kit Carson County and passed away Nov. 24, 1966, at the age of 47 years and 3 months.
He entered the U.S. Army in July of 1941 during World War II and served until November 1945 with his overseas duty in the European area.
He was united in marriage to Jane Gorman on Oct. 1, 1949, at Burlington. Five children were born to this union, with two of them preceding him in death.
The family made their home in Colby, Kans. where he was employed by Symns Schaffer and then moved to Scott City in 1957 where he was a commercial truck operator. He was a member of the Christian Church in Colby and of the Scott City VFW.
Survivors are his wife, Jane; a son, Francis Dean; and two daughters, Lola Ann and Nancy Jane, all of the home; his mother, Mrs. Nellie Brooks and stepfather, Arthur Brooks, of Burlington; two sisters, Nola Mangus of Burlington and Helen Weber of Denver; his father, William Hawpe, of Utah, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Burial was in the Scott City cemetery. Graveside services were conducted by the VFW of Scott City.
