Mary Shaw was, acccrding to one source, a daughter of Daniel Shaw and Mary MacApline. She married Rev. William Ayers (1798-1863) around 1822. They lived in Marion County, South Carolina. During the War Between the States, Rev. Ayers' brother, John "Jack" Ayres, became ill with smallpox while in the Army. He came home, and the disease infected many people in the neighborhood. Rev. and Mrs. Ayers, and at least one of their daughters died of smallpox in 1863.

The children of Mary Shaw and William Ayres were: Thomas Wilford Ayres (1823-1908, m. Martha J. Williamson), Katherine Ayers (1825-?, m. Major Henry B. Cook), Andrew J. Ayres (1828-1844), Daniel Ayres (1831-1839), Elizabeth F. Ayres (1833-1873, m. S. Brook "Buck" Watson), Enoch Shaw Ayres (1835-1912, m. Samantha Tyler), Mary Ayres (1838-1863), Davis Dwight Ayres (1841-1862), Margaret Ann Ayres (1843-1902, m. Levi Grainger), Hannah Jane Ayres (1845-?).
