Virgil J. Gross was born August 3, 1918, at Earling, Iowa. He died February 29, 2000, at Salina Regional Health Center.

Mr. Gross was a Salina resident since 1961, moving from Kansas City. He was an FAA air traffic controller, retiring after active and reserve service as an Air Force Major. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was a bass player with the Tommy Mac Orchestra, the Dixie Six and other area groups.

He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians, the Salina Downtown Lions, American Legion, Moose Lodge, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Reserve Officers Association and the Retired Officers Association. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

His wife, Betty J., died in 1980. Survivors included two sons, Virgil John and Jeffrey Lynn; two daughters, Sandra Jean McBride and Deborah Hockett; a brother, Mathew; eight grandchildren and a greatgrandchild.
