Boston Tea Party participant. Little is known of Howard's early life other than the changing of his surname from Hayward to Howard. It is not known whether it was his father or he who may have changed the name. What is known is that Howard was a ship's carpenter living in Boston and was an early supporter of independence from England. He was a neighbor of Paul Revere and was on numerous patriotic committee's. A little before sundown on December 16, 1773 Howard, along with other "Sons of Liberty" met at the Old South Meeting House with John Hancock presiding. They were to devise measures to decide how to react with the arrival of British ships laden with English tea. They decided to remove the tea cargo from the ships, and departed the church onto Milk street through that part of town which led to the wharves. They divided into three groups, each with a leader and gained entrance to the ships and quietly proceeded to remove the cargo by hoisting out the crates and emptying their contents onto the dock. All parties who participated in the "Boston Tea Party" were sworn to secrecy much as the "Signers" were. For years none of the names were known and it would be years before the participants were identified. Howard would not live long enough to realize the enormous significance and consequences of this event in the history of America.
