George was born in Douglas County, Oregon and raised by his maternal grandfather.

According to the book "History of the Downen Family, 1777-1970", (https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE46472), his father was killed by Indians during a cattle drive.

George's father's name was John M Nelson, according to the marriage record to Aleatha. No record of this John's death or burial has yet been found.

According to recent DNA match information on ancestry.com, John M Nelson was either the same person as a John Monroe Nelson (14 APR 1824-05 APR 1913) who married Alvira Stewart (1842-26 AUG 1900), or John Monroe's brother. George's mother was Eleatha Ridenour. After her first husband died, she married Josephus Brock and had several children. Josephus was previously married and had 5 children at the time Eleatha married him.

George was sent to live with Aleatha's parents.

He married Katheryn Mahala Snodderly on August 9, 1882 in Columbia, Washington. George worked for the railroad until an accident while on the job took his life. Kate was pregnant with their daughter, Georgia, at the time.
