Car Dropper Has Legs Badly Mangled By Railroad Car; Died Instantly
WAS ORDAINED MINISTER
Last rites were held Saturday for James Ellery Brown, 28 year old Kopperston employee, who was killed Thursday morning while dropping railroad cars down the siding to the tipple preparatory to loading.
The young man was acting as car dropper and was said to have slipped and fell beneath the wheels of the car. He was dragged about three hundred feet along the tracks. One leg was severed above the knee and the other was badly mangled. Death was almost instantaneous.
The funeral services were conducted at his home with the Rev. Wayne Rollins officiating, assisted by the Rev. Wilson.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Noah Brown, of Glen Rogers, and had been a resident of that town until he moved to his work at Kopperston. He had been employed by the Koppers company for two years. He was a member of the Crany Baptist Church, and an ordained minister. He was the treasurer of the local union at Kopperston.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Noah Brown, of Glen Rogers; his widow, Mrs. Ellna Cook-Brown; one son, James Dennis, 7; three brothers, Lacy Brown, Milam Fork; Kenner Brown, Glen Rogers; Azel Brown, Pineville; three sisters, Mrs. Nina Walker, Oceana; Mrs. Zelma Lambert, Bolt; and Mrs. Beulah Bowling, Glen Rogers.
Interment was made in the family cemetery.
Active pallbearers were: C. V. Shannon, Otis L. Allen, John Pais, Don D. Cook, Wannie Cook, Worley Walker, Gib Cook, Earl Cook.
Flower girls: Anthea Rollins, Mayfern Cook, Kathlene Cook, Pearl Paynter, Norma Brown, Coleen Brown, Gay Brown, Florence Harvey, Nellie Rose, Guinna Brown.
