I wanted to add something here that my husband (Michael Gene Newbrough) always felt about his grandmother, Kydie Waters Pollard Smothers, who died when he was only seventeen.
He said that "She was the most authentic Christian he had ever met...that she didn't just talk about being devout, caring, and devoted to her Lord, but that she really lived it; her daily life reflected it." She had a very hard and poverty-ridden life, but never complained, about anything. She spent her life looking to the needs of others -- her husband and children, and the rest of her family. She was strong in her religion, and believed in prayer for all things, at all times. She set the highest standard as a role model and made the ideal of living as Christ taught a realistic goal.

Funeral services were held Saturday (July 8, 1961) for Kydie Waters Smothers, a Penryn resident for the last 26 years. Services were conducted by the Rev. Jesse Matlock at Chapel of the Hills with Gene Scott as vocalist. Interment was at Newcastle District Cemetery.
Mrs. Smothers died July 6, in a local hospital, about one year after the death of her husband, the late Henry C. Smothers, who died July 10, 1960. Cause of death was a stroke. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Auburn.
Among the survivors are her sons, Garnold Smothers, Merced; Austin P. Smothers, Salmon, Idaho; Donald P. Smothers, Ketchikan, Alaska, and Mark H. Smothers, Cheweho (?), Washington; daughters, Mrs. Bernice Wilson, Costa Mesa, California; Mrs. Beula Van Burien, and Mrs. June Willis, both of Reno. There are 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
