Jay eloped with Doris Bostwick. He married her in Covington, Fountain Co., IN on July 28, 1941. Three children were born to this union: Carol, Hughie Jr, and Michael. Jay served in the Navy during World War II as a gunner and the ship's cook. He was injured while in the Navy when surfing. He worked at FMC before he went into the Navy and John Deere Maleable after he was out until he retired. He was an amatuer boxer both in and out of the Navy.
