The son of Daniel Immanuel & Beata Bernhardina Baumeister, he married Catherine Servay [?] in Germany and fathered Christian Ludwig (b. 07/04/48), but Catherine died during the journey to America. The elder Christian was naturalized on October 2, 1857, and married Rebecca Laucks March 15, 1859, in York, fathering Amanda Jane, who died somewhere around the age of two. In 1860, he was presumably living somewhere in or near York County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Baltimore, Maryland, July 3, 1863, understating his age by six years despite the fact he was of legal age to enlist. He mustered into federal service that same day as a private with Co. D, 9th Maryland Infantry, but was detached to unspecified service at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, during the first months of his term. He honorably discharged with his company February 23, 1864.

In 1890, he was a resident of York where he worked as a carpet weaver.
