Hard times would not be the case for the industrious Hearnes. Soon after the turn of the 19th Century, they had begun to invest in what would become their new wealth: oil. While the initial interest in the oil business was begun by John R. Hearne, one of his children, Ben W. Hearne, became a petroleum geologist and was a land man for almost 40 years. Ben W. Hearne was in the oil and gas business with companies like H. L. Hunt, Phillips, The Texas Company (Texaco), Magnolia Oil, W. C. Windsor of Tyler, and the Laird Family of Kilgore, just to name a few. The untimely death of Ben W. Hearne in 1959 prevented him from becoming one of East Texas' most prominent oil barons.
