Daughter of John Jimerson "Jack" Cowsert and Dorcas Melvina Harbin. Her father Jack Cowsert was born in Chester County, South Carolina on May 29, 1819; he died July 15, 1890 in Goodman, Holmes County, Mississippi and is buried in Goodman Cemetery.

Mattie's mother Dorcas Melvina Harbin was born November 22, 1822 in Pickens County, Alabama and died May 16, 1894 in Goodman, Holmes County, Mississippi. She is buried in Goodman Cemetery; Inscription: Wife of J.J. Cowsert, Mother of 13 children. Dorcas Melvina Harbin was the daughter of Newton Harbin and Mary Locke Noland who married in Chester County, South Carolina in 1815. They moved to Pickens County, Alabama in 1816 and in 1835, Newton and Mary Noland Harbin were charter members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Pickens County. They lived in Pickens County until about 1855 when they moved to Carroll County, Mississippi where they were enumerated on the 1860 federal census. They are buried in the Harbin Cemetery, McCarley.
