Son of George W. Burdge and Georgiana Hester. He was the only son of four children. In 1910 through 1920 he was working the mines in Sullivan and Dugger. He later drove a farming truck in the 1930's James ran two bakeries, one in Dugger and one in Sullivan. He developed an allergy to the flour and had to close up shop. He then sold cleaning agents to the school system and later decided to try his hand in real estate. James married Grace E. Cobb in Sullivan on July 5, 1900. They had 5 children: Ronald, Harold "Wayne", Howard "Byron", Mary "Hester", and Joanna. The family attended the Antioch church in Dugger. They ate fried chicken every Sunday supper. James favorite ice cream was Peach. Grace died in 1948 and James later married Ida Viola Edds. James and Ola were members of the Dugger Church of Christ. James Perry died of a heart attack on Dec. 2, 1955 and was buried with his first wife in Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan.
