A company of British cavalry made a raid from New Brunswick through Bound Brook, accompanied by a number of 'Tories,' among them the noted Bill Stewart.
On reaching the Bonney house of Benjamin Bonney, he took his little son Peres, then about four years of age and secreted himself in the cellar of his house. Stewart prowling round the house saw him sitting unarmed on the steps of the cellar and fired upon him while the child was on his lap. The ball took effect in his left groin, just missing the child. Bonney died of this wound after the third day.
Elizabeth Bonney, widow of Benjamin, married 2nd Captain John Powers.
