Spring of 1861, he enlisted in Company C, Twenty-fifth Tennessee (Confederate) Infantry, under Col. S. S. Stanton, and remained in the service until the surrender of Gen. Lee, having been engaged in numerous heavy battles and having received several severe wounds.
Previous to his discharge from the army he was promoted to the captaincy of his company, in which capacity he was serving when he surrendered with the rest of the army at Appomattox C. H.

He then returned to Warren County and engaged in teaching school about eight years, being at the same time engaged also in farming, the latter occupation having ever since occupied his time.
