STEWARTVILLE — Eleanor R. House, 91, of Stewartville, died Thursday (May 27, 2010), of natural causes, at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, where she had resided for the past month.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday (June 2, 2010) at Homestead United Methodist Church in Rochester, with the Rev. Becky Jo Thilges officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Rochester. Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday (June 1, 2010), and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday morning.

Eleanor Ruth Wise was born August 29, 1918, to Will and Gerhardine Anna (Gooseman) Wise in Dawson, Iowa. She grew up on the family farm and moved at 10 years of age with her family to a farm in rural Wasioja. She attended Wasioja elementary school and graduated from Mantorville High School in 1936. On February 18, 1938, she married Robert L. House in Cresco, Iowa.

Following their marriage the couple farmed in rural Wasioja before Bob went to help build the Alaskan Highway in 1942. Eleanor moved to Rochester, and her husband joined her there in 1943. She was employed at the Red Owl grocery store in the Miracle Mile Shopping Center in Rochester for 10 years and in the catalog department at JCPenney for 20 years until her retirement in 1965. Mr. House was employed at Mayo Clinic as an x-ray technician for 40 years.

The Houses moved to Stewartville in 1982, and both were active volunteers for the Salvation Army and Channel One in Rochester for many years. Mr. House died on March 27, 1999.

Mrs. House was a longtime member and active volunteer at Homestead United Methodist Church in Rochester, and was a longtime member and past president of the Stewartville Lionesses. She enjoyed dancing, keeping journals, and especially time spent with her precious family and friends.

She is survived by four daughters, Carolyn Mahaffey of Clear Lake, Iowa, Betty (Jerome) Alldritt of Dodge Center, Mary (Robert) Burk of Eyota and Sandra (George) Maule of Evans, Ga.; two sons, Jerry (Carolyn) House of Rochester and Robert (Ann) House of Eden Prairie; 18 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; one sister, Edna Hineman of Lime Ridge, Wis.; and one brother, Frank (Phyllis) Wise of Rochester. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; two sons-in-law, Ralph Mahaffey and Eugene Stoltenberg; one brother-in-law, Clinton Hineman; and an infant grandson, Scott.
