Elizabeth was born to Barbara and Samuel Schaffer (Schaeffer/Shaffer/Shafer), both natives of Germany. They settled in Pennsylvania.

Elizabeth married Philip Housholder (Haushalter/Hausholder/Householder) on June 17, 1877. The couple had nine children, (one of whom died very young) and, sadly, Philip (Philop) died in 1895 at age 40. The children all went to work as soon as they were old enough to help support the large family.

The family was very close, and after the other children had gone to start their own lives, youngest daughter Catherine continued to live with her mother. Her children adored her, and the family had many gatherings with many photographs taken of sons and daughters surrounding Elizabeth, and Elizabeth invariably had a bouquet of flowers on her lap. She lived to age 94.
