Annie Sales Kirtland was the daughter of William and Mary Sales. She was the wife of James "Ellsworth" Kirtland and the mother of one child, a daughter, Mary Kirtland Slack. Annie and Ellsworth were graduates of the University of Michigan. They were experienced and valued teachers in 1891 when both Annie and Ellsworth were in charge of the new Juanita School on Langdon Road, now NE 116th Street. The following year, they were teacher and principal of the new Kirkland School. Later they moved to Seattle where they were teacher and principal in Ballard. In 1901 Ellsworth was appointed by the US Government to be Superintendent of Schools in the Philippians. Annie returned to Kirkland to live and teach in the Kirkland School before joining her husband in the Philippians. Daughter Mary remained with her aunt, Mrs. J.S. Calkins and Grandmother Mary Sales in Woodinville but eventually she did join her parents in Manila. Annie contracted a disease while in Manila and never recovered. She died in Redmond on October 20, 1913.
Daughter Mary married twice and had a large family. She is buried in Wyoming which is where she had settled.
Widower Ellsworth moved to Wyoming to be close to his daughter. He continued to teach. While in Wyoming, Ellsworth married again. The couple moved to Michigan where they lived on the homestead of Annie's parents and where Annie had grown up. Here they had three children. This shows that the Kirtland and Sales families remained close after Annie's death.
No obituary or death certificate has been found for Annie Sales Kirtland. Much of what is known came for King County area records and from James Ellsworth Kirtland's 1932 obituary. He was still teaching at the age of 69. At this time, no photos have been found.
